Carbon Intensity ScoringWhat is a Carbon Intensity Score?
A Carbon Intensity (CI) score measures the carbon emissions produced per bushel of grain, reflecting the environmental impact of growing and harvesting crops. Factors such as fuel use, fertilizers, irrigation, yield and transportation contribute to the CI score. Lowering the CI score means reducing emissions, which benefits both the environment and the farmer’s bottom line, especially in markets like biofuel production where low-carbon feedstocks are in demand.
Farmers with lower Carbon Intensity (CI) scores have the opportunity to participate in carbon credit programs. By adopting sustainable practices that reduce carbon emissions—such as reducing inputs or improving soil health—farmers can earn carbon credits. These credits can then be sold to companies or organizations looking to offset their own emissions. This creates an additional revenue stream for farmers while supporting environmentally friendly farming practices. Earning carbon credits not only helps reduce your environmental impact but also boosts your farm’s profitability.

Through our partnership with Continuum Ag, we offer farmers access to the TopSoil platform, a powerful tool designed to help you manage and improve your farm’s CI score.
